Non-Binary is Short for ‘Look at Me’

2024

I am critiquing the rhetoric that marginalizes non-binary individuals, drawing from my journey navigating social, self, and political conflicts around my own gender identity.

The floor-to-ceiling patterns are audio spectrograms, which visualize sound frequencies. The audio is from a Fox News segment titled “Non-Binary is short for ‘look at me’.” The increased scale highlights the intensity of the rhetoric used.

These patterns are interrupted with blurred and distorted self-portraits, symbolizing my struggle to accept my identity in an antagonistic environment. By inserting images of myself, I challenge the hate speech and offer an honest representation of my experience and who I am.
